RAVENSDALE COTTAGES
In A secluded setting, set amongst the trees beneath Raven’s Crag, and deep in the heart of Cressbrook Dale are two tiny rows of former lead miners cottages which are so chocolate box pretty and original in their detail and character that they would be the perfect setting for period film or television drama productions.
The cottages are also known locally as The Wick which is taken from Berry-me-wick, being a grange of a small manorial settlement, an outlier of a manor.
The cottages date from the 19th century and are relatively easy to find if you head up the lower of the steep roads in nearby Cressbrook and follow the drive which is signposted to Ravensdale. However, there is no through road and parking is restricted, so the cottages are best if approached on foot.
Ravensdale Cottages are surrounded by beautiful countryside with several footpaths. Cressbrook Dale is famed for its wild flowers, flora and fauna, and a visit in early May is especially recommended to see the wonderful display of orchids.
