One of our most popular guided walks, and many would argue that ‘The Great Ridge’ is the finest walk in the Peak District!
We often start this walk from the village of Hope, and follow low level paths through meadows to the village of Castleton, famous for its castle and Blue John Caves. To reach the summit of Mam Tor we have the option of either a steep ascent to the top of towering limestone cliffs high above Winnats Pass with breathtaking views, or an easier path which winds its way up the hillside through fields and moorland. As we approach the summit of Mam Tor there is fascinating evidence of a bronze age hill fort, and you can learn why the hill is known today as ‘The Shivering Mountain’. The views from the trig point at the top are breathtaking and well worth the climb! We then follow the ridge of hills over Hollins Cross, Back Tor, and Lose Hill with panoramic views on one side across the Vale of Edale to Kinder Scout, and on the other side across the Hope Valley and beyond.
The walk is about 9 miles (14km) and involves approx 500 metres of ascent. You can walk ‘The Great Ridge’ with us either by joining one of our occasional group guided walks or by using our Personal Walking Guide service. We would love to see you!
