Peak District barns have been transported into the 21st century with often lavish and luxurious interiors, yet retaining the character and features of their initial purpose. Many barns are constructed of solid stone such as limestone or gritstone which would have been sourced and quarried locally. Some have even kept their traditional stone flagged floors and stone slab roofs, but most now incorporate central heating and even log fires to make the interiors warm and inviting.
Unsurprisingly the hills and dales of the Peak District are dotted with farms, farm buildings and barns as this rural idyll in the heart of England has a history of agriculture dating back to prehistoric times.
Traditional farming practises are still maintained and you are guaranteed to see fields containing cattle and sheep as you drive around the National Park. However, methods of farming have changed considerably in the last half century leaving many small farm buildings redundant for agricultural use. Realising the increasing demand for holiday and overnight accommodation in the area, many of these barns have now been transformed into environmentally friendly and luxurious places to stay.
It is not unusual to see Barns advertised with names that conjure up images of their past. The Cowshed, The Shippon and The Sheep Pen being just a few that spring to mind.
Accommodation ranges from Bunk Barns or Camping Barns which provide only basic undercover facilities for those wanting a budget bed for the night that is not exposed to the elements, to a 5* luxury barn conversion with more gismos, gadgets, high quality fixtures and fittings than a luxury holiday cottage, hotel or b&b.
Due to the nature of their original occupation, many of the Peak District barns can be found in the heart of the countryside for those in search of a rural retreat. There is often access straight from the accommodation to fabulous footpaths, country tracks and trails, perfect for you to explore and adventure during your stay.
