Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn…
A delightful 17th century freehouse offering 3 star B&B accommodation, in the historic Peak District Village of Castleton. A warm welcome awaits you at this traditional, family-run ‘proper’ country pub. Karen and John have ensured it retains a real flavour of days gone by and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that is sure to refresh visitors however short their stay.
To maintain the traditional and welcoming ambience we have become famous for, you will not find any pool tables or juke boxes in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn. Instead, you are free to sit undisturbed beside the fires in our heavily-beamed, cosy bar area and enjoy a drink and a chat in quiet, relaxed surroundings. We keep a wide choice of award-winning cask ales and also serve good, wholesome food in both the bar and restaurant.
History
The earliest reference to an ale house in Castleton was 1577 when Richard Lea and Richard Altfield had ‘Alehowsis’. It was one of these that was probably on the site of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn. The present building was built in 1660 by the Hall family, who had lived in Castleton since medieval times and become one of the village’s most prominent benefactors.
The building, once a farmstead, passed down through various members of the family until in 1748 when, known as the Wagon and Horses, it came into possession of a full license. It wasn’t until 1847 that it finally became ‘Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese’.
Castleton’s famous Garland ceremony (Oak Apple Day) takes place on 29th May each year in commemoration of the restoration of Charles II to the throne. In fact, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese plays an important part in the ceremonial Garland parade.
