The Hayloft is a brand new conversion in what was formally the groom’s accommodation. It has outstanding country views from all rooms across the valley and even from your bed! You are surrounded by wildlife, birdsong and absolute tranquility.
The flat is beautifully decorated with all the modern amenities you could possibly want to make your stay special and hassle free. There is full insulation and central heating and the open plan sitting room has a cosy wood burner which even on the coldest winter days keeps you toasty and warm. There is a large TV, DVD’s galore and books, games and jigsaws to keep you amused in the event of wet weather. The kitchen has everything you could want to rustle up dinner with and of course has a dishwasher. The bedroom has a very comfortable king-size bed with electric blankets and Egyptian cotton bedding. The bathroom has an elegant free standing claw footed bath with a separate power shower and luxurious towelling and bath robes
You will have this flat all to yourself and in addition have access to a private garden and a BBQ area. Parking is ample, but it should be noted that the flat is on the first floor and the outside steps might not be suitable for the elderly or infirm.
Charles and Caroline or the housekeeper will be on hand to help with all aspects of your stay from advising on the many walks from your doorstep
(Charles has published books on the subject) to providing meals or picnics if required.
On arrival you will be welcomed with a plate of either homemade cakes or biscuits and the log burner will be lit for you with a basket of wood also provided! With advance notice we are happy to take delivery of an online shop for you. We do however provide a basic welcome pack of olive oil, eggs (usually from our own happy chickens), bread, butter, tea, coffee and sugar. We also provide a few start up capsules for the Nespresso machine if you intend to use this for your coffee (there is also a cafeteria) you will please need to bring more of your own or they can be purchased from ourselves.If you wish to have homemade oven ready meals provided for you, please let us know in advance.
We provide a detailed information pack identifying the enormous amount of places to visit in the area and also the many good places to eat. Our local pub, The George at Alstonefield, is extremely good and therefore does need advance booking which we can do for you with enough warning.
The Hayloft is situated in the former stable yard of Casterne Hall. The Hall itself is open to the public on many days of the year and also hosts its famous Christmas Tours and teas. Should you wish to join any of these tours please see our website for details and dates. Or we are happy to arrange a private tour for yourself.
The Peak District is one of the most beautiful areas in Britain, famed for its wonderful walking. There are also many opportunities for rock climbing and clay pigeon shooting. Should you wish to bring your horse we offer exceptional equestrian facilities, off road hacking, 30×50 all-weather ménage with full set of show jumps, horse walker, solarium and fantastic grazing.
Casterne Hall is located in the hills above the small hamlet of Ilam with outstanding views over the Manifold Valley. However, it is only 6 miles from Ashbourne with its excellent restaurants, shops and antiquities.
The surrounding area has so much to offer for all ages, whether it’s is for a weekend break or fortnights holiday. Walkers and cyclists all have so much to choose from, with great selection of trails with easy distance – including Tissington, High Peak and of course Dovedale.
Carsington Water is only 15 minutes away which offers cycle hire, kayaking, sailing, fly fishing and bird watching. Wilde Park is about 30 minutes and offers paint balling, quad biking and shooting. For the really adventurous we are 15 minutes from Alton Towers. For our younger visitors Go Ape, Gullivers Kingdom and the Heights of Abraham are all within 30 minutes’ drive.
The nearest gastro pub is the George, 12 minutes away. Alternatively, there are several other good pubs in the area
Alternatively, there are many fine stately homes to be visited in the vicinity, including, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, Hardwick Hall, Sudbury Hall, Tissington Hall, and Calke Abbey and Chatsworth House (this also has a superb garden, children’s farmyard and adventure playground).
Finally, some of the finest walking in England starts at our front door!
