South Normanton

South Normanton is a busy village near Alfreton, which grew rapidly after the opening of a colliery in 1871 the last colliery closed in 1969 and little remains of the industry that once employed almost every adult man in South Normanton. The village is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 and it was a small holding belonging to William Peverell who may have been the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror.
